Overheard a supervisor swear by roughing strategies, now I get it

Was standing near the machine at Precision Components in Dayton last Friday and heard our lead guy tell a new hire that you should never finish a part in the same pass you roughed it. He said coolant pressure and tool deflection mess with the tolerance every time, even on aluminum. I used to push through with a single finish pass to save time, but after trying his two-pass method on a 316 stainless job, the surface finish went from okay to mirror. Has anyone else seen a bigger jump in part quality just by splitting rough and finish, or is it more material specific?
