My old lead hand told me in 2011 to always leave 0.010 on the floor for finishing, and I still do it
Randy was a grumpy guy who ran a Haas VF-2 for 22 years at the plant in Rockford. I was 19 and green and wanted to hog everything out in one pass. He watched me scrap a plate on a Friday and just said, "leave ten thou for the finish and quit being in a hurry." I didn't get it at the time. Then I watched him hold a 0.0005 tolerance on a bearing bore all afternoon because he never fought the tool. Now I run my own mill and I still rough leaving that skin on purpose. The kicker is I tried to teach a kid the same thing last month and he looked at me like I was speaking Chinese. Anyone else pick up a habit from an old timer that you can't shake even if the CAM software says you can?
