My daughter called my best machined part a spaceship piece
After months of trying, I finally got the chatter out of a long aluminum cut. I showed the smooth part to my girl, and she said it must be for a rocket. We laughed about it all through dinner, and I felt really good about the progress. What's the funniest thing someone has said about your work?

Ever have a kid rename your whole job? My niece calls my fitness plans "exercise recipes". Makes the long hours feel different in a good way. Love when people see our work through fresh eyes.

Sounds cute but it actually bugs me. Calling it "exercise recipes" makes my work sound like a simple hobby, not the science-based programming it really is. It washes away all the real knowledge behind planning for injuries, plateaus, and different body types. Sometimes fresh eyes just see the surface and miss the deep stuff.

Yeah, the "surface and miss the deep stuff" part gets me. I felt that way when a client called my route planning "just driving around." I started explaining one tricky delivery, like the hidden driveway and the dog, and they totally got it. Sometimes just picking one small, specific piece of the work to explain changes how they see the whole thing.
