Finally tried that boring insert after 3 years of avoiding it
I kept ignoring the standard CNMG432 insert for my lathe work because I thought it was too basic. Turns out it cuts 6061 aluminum way cleaner than the fancy coated stuff I was buying, and I saved $12 per pack too. Anyone else got a go-to insert they slept on for way too long?

The coated ones actually last longer on harder stuff though.

My friend used a set of those coated ones on his barn door track and they started peeling within like 3 months, maybe 4. The coating just flakes off eventually and then you're left with exposed metal that's actually worse than a standard one from the start. Plus that coating adds thickness so if your hardware is even slightly tight it'll bind up way faster. I'm gonna stick with uncoated stainless for hard stuff, it's just simpler and you know exactly what you're getting.
