DAE check your coolant concentration with a refractometer instead of guessing by color?
About 6 weeks ago I was running a batch of 4140 parts on the old Haas mill and noticed my tools were chipping way faster than usual. I had been topping off the coolant tank with straight water for a couple months because the color still looked milky and I figured it was fine. A guy from the tooling rep's shop stopped by and tested it with a $25 refractometer and it read 2 percent, should have been around 8. He said the water evaporates but the oil stays, so you keep adding water and the mix keeps getting weaker. Now I test every Friday and my insert life basically doubled, has anyone else been fooled by the color looking right?
Man, color means nothing. I learned that the hard way too, watching the tank look fine while my mix was basically water at that point. Refractometer is like 25 bucks, just get one.
