Appreciation post: the old timer at my shop who showed me how to indicate a vise in 10 minutes
When I started running a Haas VF-2 at a shop in Dayton about 8 years ago, a guy named Ray who had 30 years on the floor watched me fight a vise for half a shift and finally walked over and showed me the tap and dial method without saying a word about how long I had been struggling. He just said "you are chasing the needle, let the needle come to you" and had me zeroed in tighter than my old way ever got, maybe 10 minutes total. What is the one little trick an older operator passed down to you that you still use every single day?
Ray sounds like a solid dude. My own version of that lesson was a guy named Walt who watched me spend 20 minutes shimming a vise with a feeler gauge, then showed me the two-hammer tap method. I felt like a genius and an idiot at the same time, which is pretty much my whole life story in this trade. He also told me to snug the bolts in a cross pattern before I torque them down, and that one stuck with me more than anything from any class I ever took. Fifteen years later I still do it that way, every single vise, every time.
