A new hire asked me why we still keep the old paper manuals in the shop office.
My boss, who started on manual mills in the 80s, overheard and said, 'Because the power goes out, but the pages don't,' and that simple line about redundancy really stuck with me.

Ever have a tablet or laptop battery die right when you need a spec? We keep a binder of the most common machine setup sheets next to the old manuals. It's saved us a ton of time when the network is slow or someone's using the main computer.

Yeah, that binder idea is solid. We ended up laminating the most critical setup sheets and taping them right to the machine cabinets. It's a little extra work up front, but you never have to go looking.

That phrase "you never have to go looking" really sticks with me because that's exactly where most of our time gets wasted. The whole idea of laminating and taping them right to the machines is genius. It takes maybe 15 minutes upfront but saves hours of people wandering around asking or digging through drawers. I'm the type who hates clutter, so I resisted taping stuff to cabinets for years. But honestly, function beats looks when you're on a deadline and the machine is beeping at you. The binder idea works too, it just depends on how many different people run that machine and how often they need to look at it.
