Friend of mine spent two weeks dialing in a bore to within two tenths because the print said so. Finally sent the part to the customer and they called him back confused, asking why he bothered when the mating part had a half-thousandth clearance. He said the engineer who drew it just copied the tolerance block from an old template, never actually measured anything himself. Cost him two weeks of setup time and a bunch of rework on other jobs that sat waiting. He still checks prints now, but he also calls the customer first if something feels tighter than it needs to be. That foreman gave you the same lesson, just way earlier than most guys learn it.
