Vent: printed 500 business cards on my home inkjet in RGB and the navy came out purple
So I run a small flooring business out of my garage in Akron and I finally decided to get some real business cards made instead of just handing people my phone number on a scrap of paper. I fired up my old Epson at home, opened the file in whatever the default program was, and typed in a navy blue that looked perfect on my screen. Hit print on 500 sheets of card stock I grabbed from a Staples run and waited. When they came out the navy was straight up purple, like a grape soda purple, and every single card was that same wrong color. I handed one to a contractor I was bidding a job for and he just squinted at it and goes, "This is purple, man." That was the moment it hit me that I had been designing stuff in RGB for years and never once thought about CMYK. Turns out my little home printer and my screen were never going to agree, and the real print shop down the street would have caught it on a proof. Cost me about 60 bucks in card stock and ink to learn that lesson, but the worst part was losing the bid. Anyone got a go-to way to check that a file is actually set up in CMYK before I waste another batch?
