That moment when your proof says CMYK but the file is actually RGB
I've been noticing more and more people sending files to our shop that claim to be CMYK but are actually still RGB. Just last week a designer from a firm in Austin sent us a big brochure that was supposed to be four-color process but the blues were totally off. How do you guys usually catch that before it goes to press? I've been checking with the info panel in Acrobat but wondering if there's a quicker trick.

you know, this reminded me of a time last summer when a client sent us these gorgeous wedding invitations with like a super specific shade of teal. they swore up and down it was cmyk, but when i dropped it into photoshop and hit the color picker, it was still in rgb mode. i swear i spent a good 20 minutes just staring at the screen trying to figure out why it looked so muddy on our test print lol. the funny thing is, we actually caught it because the file name said "final_v3_cmyk" but the metadata in acrobat still showed it as sRGB. now i just check the document color mode in illustrator before i even bother with acrobat, it's way faster.

Four out of five times when something's labeled "final" or "CMYK" it's still wrong. It's like how people name files "new" and then never rename them, you end up with 15 versions and none of them are the right one. Always trust the metadata over the name, that's just life at this point.
