Spot color vs CMYK for a 2-color job, the difference was huge

I had a client in Denver who needed 5,000 business cards with their logo in a deep orange. I set it up in CMYK thinking it was fine, but the press kept giving me this muddy brownish orange. After 3 failed proofs, the printer suggested we switch the logo to a Pantone spot color. Same file, same paper, and the orange came out SO much brighter and punchier. The spot color cost an extra $45 on the run, but it saved us from a reprint that would've been $200+. Has anyone else had a spot color save a job that CMYK just couldn't handle?
