A press operator in Dayton saved my brochure when I almost sent K only to print
Last month I was rushing a 3 color brochure for a client and built the whole thing in RGB because I forgot to convert it. My blacks came out as muddy browns and the navy logo looked purple, just a total mess on the proof. I called a small shop in Dayton that I use sometimes and the press guy there told me to strip the cyan and magenta out of my rich black and run it as pure K instead. He walked me through it over the phone for about 15 minutes and the second proof came back clean. He didn't have to help me and honestly could have just reprinted it and charged me for the mistake. Anyone else got a press operator who bailed them out like that?
muddy browns and the navy logo looked purple" is like, yeah that's what happens when you send RGB to print, but is that really a save? A press guy telling you to switch rich black to straight K is pretty basic stuff. Like the first thing anyone learns about CMYK. I'm not saying the dude was rude for helping, but 15 minutes on the phone is nothing. He probably did it between jobs while eating a sandwich. And the idea that he could've just reprinted and charged you, well yeah, he could've, but shops don't usually eat reprint costs on customer mistakes anyway, so his options were help you or lose the job. Maybe I'm just jaded but a phone call about black levels doesn't really move the needle for me. Sounds like a normal Tuesday at any decent shop.
