The magenta trap that ruins every neon orange I try
I keep seeing people post their neon orange prints and they look like a faded peach in real life. The problem is almost always the same: they are mixing CMYK like it is RGB, pumping up yellow and a tiny bit of magenta. But real neon orange needs a heavy magenta base, like 30-35% at least, before you even touch the yellow. I figured this out after ruining six test prints on a batch of hoodies for a local bike shop in Portland. The shop owner literally said "that looks nothing like the screen" and I had to eat the cost of the blanks. Once I dropped the yellow by 10% and let magenta do the heavy lifting, the orange popped like a traffic cone. Has anyone else hit this wall with high-vis colors or am I the only one who learned this the hard way?

Swear to god, I ruined a whole run of safety vests for a construction crew because I trusted the screen colors. That Portland shop story hurts just reading it, been there with the blank cost. Magenta is the hidden hero in neon colors for sure, everyone thinks it's all about yellow but that just makes mud. I learned my lesson after a client said my orange looked like a bruised apricot. Now I start every neon job with a solid magenta base and test print on the actual fabric, no shortcuts. It's wild how printers lie to you until you figure out the real ink behavior.
