Unpopular opinion: matte laminating is ruining more posters than it saves

I ran 200 copies of a map for a trail race in Asheville last month and the matte finish turned every dark contour line into a gray smear under the venue lights, so I'm done with it and want to know if anyone else has ditched matte for gloss on anything meant to be read fast.

Matte is fine for photos but garbage for maps. Gloss keeps the ink crisp and readable in bad light, which is exactly what you need on a trail. Smart move ditching it.
