The trade show demo that made me ditch gloss lamination for good
Was at the PrintExpo in Milwaukee last month and watched a vendor peel a corner of a glossy laminated poster right off the board, it went up like a bad sunburn. I had been arguing with my shop about using gloss on every customer order because it looks richer, but that demo showed me how easily it scratches and separates on textured stock. Has anyone else switched to matte after seeing something go wrong at an event, or am I the only one who got converted that fast?

The gloss peeling like a bad sunburn, that is exactly what got me too. I was at a smaller regional print fair, not as big as PrintExpo, but same thing, the guy peeled a corner and the whole finish just lifted off the textured card like cheap tape. I had always pushed gloss because it pops more in the light, but after that I went back to my shop and made them switch our standard for any textured stock to matte. We still use gloss for flat photo prints, that stuff holds fine, but anything with a little tooth to it, forget it. It also shows fingerprints way less, which honestly my customers never complain about the richer look, they just hate seeing smudges on their nice posters.
