Is a $900 RIP program actually worth it or just for the big shops?

Been fighting with our shop's driver since we got a used wide format printer in June. Colors keep shifting between what I see on screen and what comes out. A friend who runs a print shop in Boise swears by a dedicated RIP and said I was wasting my time with the stock driver. I almost pulled the trigger on one that cost $900 but then my business partner pointed out we could buy a color calibration tool for $350 and a new monitor for $400 and still have money left over. So which side are you on? Have you actually seen a $900 RIP fix banding and muddy gradients or is that just what the sales guy tells you when you're already frustrated?

Calibration tools won't fix banding, that RIP will if you set it up right.
