Ghosting on my plotter after I switched to cheap vinyl, anyone else seen this?

Last month I grabbed a 50 foot roll of vinyl from a discount outlet near Portland to save a few bucks. Worked fine for the first 20 feet, then my plotter started leaving faint duplicate outlines on every contour cut. Looked like the blade was dragging twice. I cleaned the rails, changed the blade, even recalibrated the pressure to 45 grams. Still ghosting. Turns out the vinyl backing had a weird residue that was building up on the drive wheel. Swapped back to the name brand roll and it stopped instantly. Has anyone else dealt with cheap roll residue messing with their cutter? I got 30 feet of useless material left and I'm wondering if there's a way to clean it off or if I should just bin it.
