Blew $90 on fancy RIP software and it still choked on my file

I run a small sign shop out of my garage and needed to print a 6 foot banner with some detailed gradients. Dropped $90 on a third party RIP that was supposed to handle large files better than the stock driver. First print came out fine but on the second one it just froze halfway through and spat out garbage. Tried reinstalling and tweaking settings but it keeps crashing on anything over 500MB. Has anyone else had luck with cheaper alternatives or am I stuck paying for the pro version?

Is it just me or does this feel like the same pattern as buying a mid tier tool that promises pro results but craps out when you actually push it? My buddy went through three different printers for his photography prints before he learned the painful truth that "budget friendly" usually means "works great for small stuff, falls apart under pressure." You might be better off saving for the pro version or splitting the bigger files into sections before sending them through. What does the memory usage look like on your computer when the RIP tries to process those big files?
