Appreciation post: the cheap densitometer that finally made my color bars make sense
For two years I judged my color bars by eye under the shop lights in Baltimore, and my grays always drifted green by the end of a long run. A retired pressman handed me his old X-Rite 1 (a 418, the 1980s one with the little wheel), and I finally saw my magenta was running 0.08 heavy the whole time. Now I check the strip before every run and my makeup sheets dropped from a whole box a week to about a quarter of one. The old guys were not kidding about densitometry, but nobody ever sat me down with a real tool until now. What do you all use when a job walks in with no color bar at all, do you eyeball it or run a patch somewhere hidden?
