A press operator in Reno told me my blacks were stacking wrong and it took 6 weeks to see it
About 6 weeks ago I was running a run of 500 flyers for a realtor here in town, dark background, white text, nothing wild. My proofs looked fine on screen. I printed 40 sheets before I noticed the blacks were building up so thick they were offsetting onto the back of the next sheet, little ghost smudges of the text showing through. A guy named Ray at the shop on Wells Avenue watched me fight it for 20 minutes and then said my black plate was set to 100 percent across the board instead of rich black with a lower K. I had been running the same profile for almost 2 years and never caught it because most of my jobs were light. Cost me about $70 in paper and an hour of reprinting. If your dark areas look greasy or you get transfer marks, check your black build before you blame the ink or the rollers. What's your go to rich black mix for coated stock?
