The Tuesday my file naming system finally clicked into place
Last week I had one of those days where everything just worked, and I still can't stop thinking about it. I was digging through a shared drive for a logo asset for a flyer, and for the first time in my life, I found the exact version I needed in under two minutes. Normally I'd be stuck opening 15 folders named 'final_v2', 'FINAL_use_this', and 'newest_3' before giving up and asking the person who made it. But I had spent an hour on Sunday renaming everything with a date and a short description, like '2024_11_flyer_market_logo.psd', and it honestly felt like magic. I even found a backup from 6 months ago that I thought was gone forever because the file name made sense. Has anyone else had that moment where a boring, basic habit you put off suddenly pays off in a single afternoon?

Loving this because the real win isn't even finding your logo in two minutes, it's the six month old backup you thought was gone. That's the part nobody talks about when they push the whole "just name your files right" thing. The payoff isn't speed, it's that your past self basically left you a gift you didn't know you had. Once you start adding dates, you also start noticing patterns you never saw before, like how many times you redid a flyer for the same market or how long a "final" version really lasted. That little bit of history turns a messy folder into something closer to a diary of your own work. Do it for a year and you can actually go back and see what you were doing last spring without opening a single file.
