Can we talk about how Gmail labels beat folders, or did I just fall for the hype?
I swore by folders for years. Every project got its own folder, every client got a subfolder, and by 2023 my inbox had 47 nested folders that I barely touched. Then a coworker in Austin showed me how she runs her whole design workflow with Gmail labels and filters, zero folders, and I figured it was just productivity blogger nonsense. But I tried it for two weeks on a messy rebrand project and I could actually find stuff. One email could sit under 'Client A' and 'Pending Review' at the same time, which folders can never do. Now I archive everything and let labels do the work, and my inbox sits at zero most days. The flip side is that labels can pile up just as bad if you make too many, and searching still stinks when people reply in weird threads. So which is it, are folders actually dead or did I just get lucky with one clean project? Would love to hear from people who tried labels and went back.
