Went back to my childhood beach in Maine and barely recognized it

I visited Old Orchard Beach last weekend for the first time in maybe 12 years. The dunes where I used to play as a kid are like half the size they were back then, and the water line came way further up the sand than I remember. A local told me they've lost about 40 feet of beachfront since 2005 due to storms and sea level rise. Has anyone else gone back to a place from your past and seen big changes like this?

@michaeladams brings up a good point about the grasses actually, did the town ever try to replant any of that vegetation after the storms or did they just let it go?

Were the dunes mostly sand or did they have any grasses or plants holding them together? Curious if the vegetation loss sped up the erosion or if it was pure storm damage.
