Watched a city council meeting about our local recycling plant last Tuesday
They approved a plan to ship our plastic waste 300 miles away instead of upgrading the facility here. My neighbor said, 'Out of sight, out of mind,' and it just felt so true. How do you push back when your own town makes a choice that just moves the problem somewhere else?

Your neighbor nailed it. We had a similar vote about our water treatment plant, and the council went with the cheaper truck-it-out option. The math they showed us only looked at next year's budget, not what it costs the next town over or the fuel burned every day. How do we get them to see past the quick fix?

But what if the local upgrade would have doubled our trash bills? Isn't sending it out the cheaper choice for people here right now?

Shipping it that far just makes the carbon footprint worse. Did the council give a real reason for choosing this over local upgrades, like a cost breakdown? It seems like they're ignoring the long-term effects.
