Warning: my town's new curbside compost program did more in 6 months than 3 years of me nagging people to recycle
Our city rolled out a food scrap bin program in Riverside last fall and my neighborhood's trash actually got lighter by about 30 percent while the blue recycling bins sat half empty and mostly wrong. People just won't sort plastic and paper correctly no matter how many flyers you hand out, but give them one bin for banana peels and coffee grounds and they nail it. So if sorting is really the hard part for everyone, why do we keep building climate plans around recycling instead of the one thing people will actually do?
