Tried a heat pump dryer vs my old gas one for 3 weeks, and the energy bill gap was real but not where I expected
Last month in Denver I ran my old gas dryer for two weeks and tracked the gas bill, then borrowed a neighbor's heat pump dryer for the next three weeks. The heat pump used about 40% less total energy on paper, but it took nearly twice as long per load, so the savings mostly came from not heating the room, not the actual drying. My gas bill dropped $19 that cycle, but I found myself running loads earlier in the day to avoid peak electric rates. Is the slower cycle a dealbreaker for anyone else, or am I just bad at timing laundry around peak hours?
Did you actually notice the room feeling cooler with the heat pump, or was that just a guess on your end? Forty percent less energy sounds nice on paper until you're up at 6am trying to beat the rate hike. That slow cycle would drive me nuts with a family, but if you're home during the day anyway it might not matter. The $19 drop is real money though, so I get why you're torn.
