Thought carbon offsets were a scam until I actually looked into one project

I used to roll my eyes every time I saw companies bragging about buying carbon offsets. Felt like greenwashing to me. Then my sister got a job at a conservation nonprofit in Oregon and walked me through their wetland restoration project. They pulled 14 tons of carbon per acre in the first 3 years according to actual soil samples. Not saying all offsets are legit, but now I at least look for third party verification before writing them off completely. Has anyone here found a specific offset program they actually trust?

Keeps making me wonder if the real scam was all the companies buying the cheap, sketchy offsets. The verified, high quality ones seem to actually do something if you dig into the science behind them.

Found a small program in Colorado that does soil carbon credits for ranchers. They pay farmers to rotate cattle and let native grass recover. The results were checked by a university ag department, not some random company. I chipped in a few hundred bucks and got a report with actual numbers on how much carbon the soil held. Felt a lot better than throwing money at a tree planting scheme with no follow up.
