My rain barrel overflowed and flooded my basement stairs in Portland

I set up a 50 gallon rain barrel last month to water my garden, but the hose kinked after a heavy storm and it dumped all over the concrete slab by the back door. Water seeped through a crack and pooled under the stairwell, which smelled like wet dirt for three days. Has anyone else dealt with overflow issues from a DIY catchment setup, or should I just add a diverter valve?
