My neighbor's compost bin converted me after 2 minutes in her backyard
I ran into my neighbor Carol last Saturday while she was hauling a bucket of veggie scraps to her backyard. I joked about her 'garbage garden' and she just laughed and said, 'Come here, look at this.' She lifted the lid on this basic wire bin and there were worms and steam coming off it. She told me she has cut her trash output down to one small bag a month for a family of four. That sounded nuts to me. Anyway, I started my own pile with a 20 dollar bin from the hardware store and some cardboard. It's been 3 weeks and I'm weirdly excited about turning food waste into dirt. For anyone else who does this, how do you handle fruit flies without spraying chemicals everywhere?

Ha! Your post made me laugh. My buddy Dave started composting last year. He got the same bug you have now. Anyways, he had a big fruit fly problem with his kitchen bin. He just stopped putting food in it for a week. Then he buried the scraps deeper in the pile. That killed the flies. He swears it works. Says the flies need the food right at the top.
