My electric bill showed I used 400 kWh last month, which is half what it was a year ago after I got serious about unplugging things.
I always thought those vampire power warnings were overblown until I saw the actual number drop that much, so what's the one appliance you were surprised to find was a big energy drain?

Wow, I totally thought the same thing! My game changer was the old desktop computer I kept on as a "server." Plugged it into a power meter and it was sucking down almost as much as my fridge when it was just sitting there idle. I felt so dumb for leaving it on 24/7 for years.

Have you tried plugging your TV and media stuff into a power strip with a remote? That old cable box @daniel_lopez mentioned reminded me, my DVR was pulling like 35 watts even when it was off and doing nothing. It adds up fast when you're running that kind of draw 24 hours a day, month after month. Those set top boxes are worse than most people realize, your mileage may vary but it's worth checking with a cheap meter.
