Last month I chose carbon offsets over a flight upgrade

I was booking a trip to Denver and had $300 to spare. The upgrade to first class was sitting right there, but I put that money into certified carbon offsets instead. The flight was cramped and I got no free drinks, but I know that cash went to a reforestation project in Brazil. Has anyone else made a similar trade off and regretted it or felt good about it?

My buddy did the same thing for a flight to Chicago, paid for wetland restoration instead of a seat with legroom, and his only takeaway was that he felt great about it for about a week and then forgot entirely. He also got stuck next to a guy who snored like a chainsaw, so he says he'd probably just take the upgrade next time.

I read somewhere that carbon offsets are basically a feel-good tax on guilt, and the math on what they actually do is super fuzzy. Your buddy probably did more for the planet by skipping the extra legroom and cramping his knees.
