Just realized my old thermostat was the lazy way out

Used to leave the heat on 68 all day while at work in Denver, then got a $140 bill in January. Swapped to a $25 programmable one that drops to 60 during the day, and that same month dropped to $95. Anyone else find the simple timer models beat the smart ones for basic savings?

Ever crank it down even lower, like 55, and just layer up with a hoodie for an hour when you get home? I found that shaving another 5 degrees off during the workday cut my bill even more than the jump from 68 to 60 did. Plus, those cheap timers are dead simple to set once and forget, no app updates or wifi fuss to deal with. Honestly, the only time I miss the smart stuff is when I want to preheat from the car, but saving $45 a month makes that tradeoff totally fine.
