I thought my town's curbside compost pickup was pointless, until a neighbor's trash can changed my mind
For two years I tossed my food scraps in the regular trash because I figured one person's banana peels would not matter. Then a neighbor on my street in Ann Arbor left his bin out in July, and the smell coming off it was nothing compared to how little actual garbage he had after a full seven days. It took me about three weeks of watching his setup before I called the city and got my own bin for $4 a month. First pickup day I had maybe a gallon of scraps and felt silly, but by the end of the month my trash bag went from three per week down to one. Anyone else on here switch over after seeing a neighbor do it first?

Wait, three bags a week down to one is a big jump and that part seems off to me. Composting scraps takes out the wet stuff, sure, but unless you were throwing away a ton of food, most of that trash was probably packaging and other dry things that still have to go somewhere. The smell and the lighter bin are real, I just would not expect the bag count to drop by that much unless your scraps were most of what you tossed.
