Can we talk about how small native plant patches get dismissed as pointless?
I planted a 4 by 8 foot patch of native wildflowers and grasses in my front yard in Grand Rapids two springs ago, and my neighbor kept calling it the weed pile. Last week I counted 11 different bee species on the blazing star alone, plus three monarch caterpillars on the milkweed. The usual advice I keep seeing is that tiny yards do not matter and you need acres for real habitat, but that patch now connects to two other small patches on my block. It took maybe $60 in seeds and one afternoon of digging, and I check it for 10 minutes each morning with my coffee. Anyone else got a small native patch that surprised them with how much shows up?
