Appreciation post: My dad's old advice about planting native trees in Texas
Back in 2017 my dad told me to stop fighting with Bermuda grass in my Austin yard and just put in live oaks and yaupon holly instead. I thought he was crazy because everyone in the neighborhood had St. Augustine lawns. Five years later those trees have survived two droughts without me ever watering them, and my water bill dropped about 30 bucks a month compared to the neighbors. Has anyone else seen a big difference swapping out traditional landscaping for local plants?

Hold on a sec, live oaks are great but yaupon holly is actually native to the East Texas piney woods, not so much the Hill Country around Austin. It'll still grow there but it wants more water than you'd think. There's a ton of better native options for that area like Texas persimmon or agarita that are true Hill Country natives. Your dad's main point is solid though, native plants are way tougher in the long run.
