Just realized a single logo redraw ate 3 weeks because the client kept sending me a faxed version of her own letterhead
A client in Tulsa hired me to clean up her bakery logo back in March. She kept mailing me a fax of her original letterhead, so every file was blurry and I couldn't trace the curves right. I ended up driving to her shop and photocopying the one good print she had in a drawer, then redrew the whole thing in Illustrator. What should have been a 2 hour job took 3 weeks of back and forth. How do you all get clients to send you a clean original when they swear the fax is the only copy?
The line about her swearing the fax is the only copy hits home. People treat the worst version of a thing as the real one because it's the one closest to hand. Same thing happens with old family photos where the only scan is a blurry phone pic of a print, or a recipe someone typed up wrong in 1998 and now everybody makes it that way. Nobody ever goes looking for the better copy because the bad one already works well enough for them. My move now is to just ask for a photo of the actual paper before I quote anything, and if they push back I tell them the fax costs them more in my hours than the drive costs me. Nine times out of ten there's a decent print sitting in a drawer somewhere.
