Unpopular opinion: asking for a deposit before showing any sketches isn't always fair

I had a client last March in Denver who wanted me to design a logo for their food truck. They asked to see a rough idea before paying anything, but everyone online says never do that. So I held firm on a 50% deposit up front, and they walked away. Turns out they were a legit small business owner just scared of getting burned after a bad experience with another designer who took their money and vanished. I lost a $600 project because I followed the popular advice too strictly. Has anyone else had better luck meeting scared clients halfway?

Did they say what the bad designer did to make them so cautious?

Oh man, it was rough. For me, @ray210, I had a designer who just didn't listen to feedback at all, so now I triple-check everything before I speak up.
