Threw $150 at a logo contest site before learning my lesson the hard way

Last spring I was desperate for a logo refresh for my own portfolio site. I saw one of those crowdspring type sites advertised on a podcast and thought hey why not. Posted a brief with like $150 prize money. Got back 47 entries and immediately realized 44 of them were clearly from the same 3 people using different accounts. The other 3 were just clip art slapped together. I wasted that cash AND then had to spend another 2 hours sorting through garbage to explain to my wife why we couldn't go out to dinner that weekend. Has anyone else gotten burned by those design contest platforms or did I just pick a bad one?

Hold up, those platforms are solid if you write a decent brief and set a reasonable prize.

Read somewhere that even small tweaks to the brief can double your entries, @taylor_barnes59.
