Question about clients who say they want 'clean' but mean something totally different

Had a client in Denver last year tell me to make their site 'clean', then spent 2 months fighting about how I couldn't use any white space or simple fonts. Has anyone else dealt with clients using vague design words to hide what they actually want?

Man "clean" just means they want it to look like their competitor's site but don't know how to say it.

Honestly it's probably just "we don't have a 3 hour meeting in us so can you make the homepage less busy." Most people don't even look at their competitor's site that close.
