Pro tip: a 42 page contract is a red flag, not a thorough one
A designer friend in Boise sent me a prospective client's contract last week and page 31 said all revisions were due within 48 hours or the project paused with no refund on the deposit. I always thought long contracts meant serious clients, but that one detail flipped it, now I read the revision and kill fee sections first, so what clause makes you walk away on page one?
Learned this the hard way a couple years back with a branding gig for a small coffee chain. The contract was only 12 pages but buried on page 9 was a clause saying they owned every concept I ever showed them, even the ones they rejected. I walked, lost the deposit, and it stung for a month. Now I flip straight to the ownership and kill fee pages before I even read the scope. What worked for me was asking for the contract before the first call, so I'm not sitting there nodding along while the clock runs. If they push back on sharing it upfront, that tells me everything I need to know.
