I used to send watermarked previews to every client, then a $900 lesson in Cleveland made me quit cold
For two years I sent low res watermarked JPGs as client previews, thinking it was the safe move, until a bakery client in Cleveland printed my watermark right onto 400 menus because she thought it was a design element I was charging extra to remove. I got the angry call on a Tuesday morning and drove over to see stacks of menus with DESIGN PREVIEW stamped across the logo, and she wanted me to pay the print bill. That's when it clicked for me: watermarks do nothing except train clients to see your work as a rough draft they can mess with, and a simple contract line plus a $200 deposit protects you way better. Now I send one full size PNG with a signed one page agreement, and nobody has pulled that move since. Has anyone else had a preview turn into a final file because the client just ran with it?
