Appreciation post: a guy at a print shop in Boise said my mockup shadow was 'lying to people' and he was right
I used to slap a soft drop shadow on every product mockup I sent out. Looked fancy, felt polished, and I thought it made my work look pro. Then about 6 months ago I'm standing at the counter of a small print shop in Boise picking up some proofs, and the owner glances at my screen and says, plain as anything, "that shadow is lying to people about where the edge is." I was a little bugged at first, but he pulled up a real proof next to my mockup and the difference was wild. The shadow was hiding a 1/8 inch gap on the bottom edge that got flagged the second the actual print came out. Now I keep mockups flat and bright with no fake depth, and I add one real close up crop of each corner instead. It takes maybe 10 extra minutes per project but I have not had a single "this isn't what I expected" email since. Has anyone else had a print person call out something like that and turn out to be dead on?
