A client in Austin called my $2,800 logo 'too sharp' and I still can't decide if she was right
So back in March I spent three weeks on a full brand refresh for a coffee shop in Austin. Charged them $2,800. I did this whole geometric mark built on a grid, every angle precise, super clean and modern. She looks at it for ten seconds and goes 'it feels too sharp, like it could cut me.' I was honestly kind of ticked off at the time. But then she pulled up a photo of her grandma's old shop sign from the 70s, all rounded edges and soft shapes, and I got what she meant, the whole vibe of the place is warm and slow, not techy. So now I start every project with a mood board full of old signs and hand-painted stuff before I touch any vectors. Here's where I'm stuck though: was she giving me real feedback or just describing a feeling she couldn't put into words? Some designers I know say clients should talk in feelings and it's our job to translate. Others say if a client can't tell you what's wrong in plain terms, you're just guessing until they happen to like it. Which side are you on?
