The number of people who use wire brushes on clay flues is scary

I was on a job last Tuesday in an old house from the 1920s. The homeowner said their regular guy had been cleaning it for years. I looked inside and saw deep scratches all over the clay liner. Someone had been using a stiff wire brush on it instead of a proper poly brush. That does REAL damage over time and can cause the liner to crack. I had to explain to them why their flue was falling apart. Has anyone else run into this kind of damage from the wrong brush?
