That old farmhouse job in Vermont taught me a lesson about creosote buildup

I was cleaning out a flue on a 1800s farmhouse last fall up near Burlington, and I found a bird nest blocking almost half the chimney. The homeowner said they hadn't used the fireplace in years, but the creosote had still caked on thick from old burning habits. It took me nearly 45 minutes with a rotary brush to break through it all. Has anyone else run into hidden blockages like that in older homes that weren't obvious from the outside?

That 45 minutes sounds like a lot for a simple brush job, to be honest.

Have people just forgotten what careful work actually looks like, @shah.evan?
