Stumbled on a stat about creosote buildup that surprised me
I was reading through some old trade journals from the 1980s I found at a garage sale last weekend, and one article said a 1/8 inch layer of creosote can reduce flue temp by 100 degrees. That seems wild considering how fast stuff piles up in a busy season. Has anyone else come across old numbers that don't match what we see today?

I mean, those old journals were running on completely different measuring equipment and testing methods. A mercury thermometer taped to the outside of a single wall pipe is going to give you way different numbers than what we'd get with an infrared gun today. Plus back then they were burning wood with way higher moisture content. I'd bet money that 1/8 inch claim was just a rough guess from some guy in a workshop who never actually tested it.
