Spent $180 on a carbon fiber brush rod. Worth every penny.

Been using fiberglass rods for years. They always splinter after a few months. Picked up a carbon fiber one from a supply house in Chicago. First job with it was a 30-foot flue that had a bird nest halfway down. The rod didn't flex or break at all. Anyone else made the switch and felt the difference?

...and that reminds me, I grabbed a carbon fiber rod from a job fair in Milwaukee once. The guy swore it could take a beating. I was cleaning out a dryer vent that had a dead squirrel plugging it up. The rod bent like a wet noodle halfway through the second joint. Turns out it was a cheap knockoff that cracked on the third pull. Real carbon fiber feels different in the hand, that much I'll say.

Grant.kevin, sounds like that guy was pushing some low-end stuff from a booth that probably didn't even touch real carbon fiber. I've had the same thing happen with a "tactical" flashlight that broke after one drop on concrete. At least your squirrel problem is solved, even if the rod isn't.

Man, that reminds me of a buddy of mine who works for a chimney sweep outfit in Ohio. He bought a rod from some online deal and it snapped on his first real job... a big ol' raccoon nest stuck in a flue. The pole just crumbled when he tried to push through the packed twigs and leaves. He had to pull the whole thing out piece by piece with his hands, covered in that nasty animal mess. He swore off cheap rods after that and saved up for a real carbon fiber one from a supply house.
