Shoutout to the old timer who told me to ditch the wire brush for plastic
I was over at a job in Portland last month clearing out a pretty heavy creosote buildup. This old sweep named Frank came by to drop off some tools and saw me using a wire brush on the flue tiles. He told me to stop right there and switch to a plastic bristle brush because the wire was scratching up the tiles and making the next cleaning way harder. I figured he was just being picky. Three sweeps later I went back to a house I did six months ago and sure enough the tiles were all torn up with fine scratches. That creosote clung to them like crazy and took twice as long to remove. Now I only use plastic on glazed tile and save the wire for stainless liners. Has anyone else had a similar screwup with wire brushes?

Learned this same lesson the hard way with my kitchen knives. Had this old ceramic sharpener I used for years. Friend said it was chipping the blade edge. Ignored her. New knives got micro chips within months. Cheap fix now but still annoying. Sometimes the "fussy old timers" are just saving us future headaches.
