Pro tip: I finally started pulling the stove pipe before brushing, and it took me 4 years to admit I was wrong
I used to always brush from the top down and fight the shelf of soot that piles up right above the damper. Last month a 30 year sweep named Ray in Worcester showed me his way on a nasty 1920s colonial: pull the pipe, bag it, brush from the firebox up. The whole job took 35 minutes instead of the 2 hours I used to burn on that same setup. My vacuum filter also stopped clogging every third house. Any of you still brushing top down, or did you switch years ago like I should have?
