A homeowner in Boise stopped me mid-brush and asked if creosote was "just ash that got wet"
I was up on her roof two weeks ago pulling the brush through a 30 foot flue and she yelled up from the yard asking why I didn't just hose it out instead. I tried to explain stage 3 glaze vs. fluffy soot right there on the ladder, but she cut me off saying her last guy never mentioned any of that in 12 years. How are you guys walking people through the difference between sweepable soot and the glazed stuff that needs a rotary, without losing them halfway through the sentence?
Had a lady in Nampa last spring, 92 years old, sharp as a tack, watched me the whole time from her kitchen window. When I came down she handed me a jar of peaches and said her dad used to just throw a lit newspaper up the chimney every fall and call it good. I laughed and told her that was basically the old school version of what I do, just way more smoke in the living room. She nodded like that made total sense to her. Sometimes the jars of peaches version of the story lands better than the stage 3 glaze version.
